Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick "Homegirl" [review]

The Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipsticks spoke to me as soon as they were released. Studs and skulls are my obsession. The gorgeous studded packaging on this lipstick is flawless. Kat Von D reformulated her lipsticks and included 18 cult favourite shades from her previous line with 12 new shades to make up this collection. There are 30 shades in this collection and I could not decide what I wanted! On a whim I decided to pick up Homegirl. There was no tester, but the sticker on the bottom was a deep dark purple, which I am always drawn to, so I picked it up.
Homegirl is described as a matte blackened berry colour. It is a deep wine/berry colour with purple undertones. I personally love the colour! The bullet is engraved with the Kat Von D logo on the side and it is encased in gorgeous packaging. I am obsessed with the packaging. When the lipstick is closed you cannot see where it opens. The packaging is a shiny black, covered in small black studs. In the bullet, the lipstick looks quite small. The lipstick contains 0.1g of product, which is the same amount of product in a MAC lipstick. I was sure at first that it was a smaller quantity than most lipsticks, but it must be an illusion!
The formulation of this lipstick is where things get a little tricky. I adore the colour but when you swatch the lipstick it feels dry on the skin. When applied to the lips it tugs and does cling to dry patches. It doesn't feel drying on the lips, which I was very surprised about. I have very dry lips, so that is a plus. Everything feels drying on my lips. It claims to have "one swipe colour" but that is not the case. It takes at least two layers to build up an even colour and as you can see from the image below, it is still slightly patchy. It accentuates the dryness on my lips and this was after exfoliating and moisturizing. I was actually have a good lip day in these pics. I could only image how this would look on a bad lip day.
From afar, you can't really tell how patchy it is. I am very torn on how I feel about this lipstick. I love the colour but I think for $26 CAN I expect a better formula. This is very dry and patchy and it doesn't live up to its expectations. If you can't live up to your claims, don't make them. It is just another strike against the product. Right now the drugstore beauty scene is flourishing and there are better matte formulas out there for much cheaper. I just expect more from a high-end beauty brand. I love this lipstick and I will keep it but I probably wouldn't purchase another one of the Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipsticks. It makes me sad because the packaging is literally my soul mate, but the formula just isn't worth it. I have heard her Everlasting Kiss Liquid Lipsticks are fantastic so I might try those instead.

  1. It's such a pretty colour, too bad about the formula, I've heard a lot of other reviews saying it wasn't great either. This is the type of colour I'd wear in the winter when my lips are most dry, so I'd much prefer something is actually moisturizing.

    1. Yeah the colour is gorgeous but the formula is lacking. I'm thinking of trying her liquid lipsicks, I heard they are fantastic and there are some of the same colours.
