I feel like smoothies have been all the rage lately. And I have been sucked right into the fad. Over the past few months I have become obsessed with smoothies. In the morning my schedule is very tight and I like to sleep as long as humanly possible. If I need to cut something out of my routine for a couple extra minutes of sleep it always ends up being breakfast. I am well aware that it is the most important meal of the day. But sleep is also important. And in my personal importance rankings, sleep wins every time. That is, until I get out the door and my stomach begins screaming for sustenance.
Smoothies are the perfect compromise. They take less than 10 minutes to make and are portable so I can eat them on the go. My all-time favourite smoothie is the Funky Monkey from Booster Juice. It is basically a banana and chocolate smoothie, which is the perfect combination. I am obsessed with anything banana flavoured (anyone remember banana medicine?! The best, right?!) Because a funky monkey has frozen yogurt in it, the calorie count is a little high and the price tag is also steep for something that I can make at home. After searching for recipes and coming up empty handed, I fooled around with the ingredients and came up with the perfect Funky Monkey dupe at home with only three ingredients!
For banana smoothies, I like to freeze my bananas in advanced. I have never seen frozen bananas being sold in the bag, most likely because bananas are picked before their ripe, unlike most other fruits. So I make my own. I don't like adding extra ice cubes to smoothies. I find that it waters the smoothie and the taste down too much. Frozen fruit gives the smoothie the texture I want without ruining the flavour. When bananas get too ripe I pop them into a freezer bag and stick them in the freezer until I want a smoothie (which is most likely going to be the next day). At some grocery stores you can also buy bananas that are going brown for a discounted price. I got a bunch of six organic bananas for half price because they were going brown: only .95¢ (what a bargain!)
You will need:
2 Frozen Bananas (chopped)
1 cup Chocolate Almond milk (I prefer the sweetened kind)
3 Tbs Plain Greek Yogurt
Directions:
Step 1: Place all ingredients in blender
Step 2: Blend until desired consistency (I hate any chunks in my smoothies but I find that bananas are one of the easiest fruits to blend)
Step 3: Pour and drink up!
I like to put my smoothies in these tumbler cups I got from Superstore. You can find these kinds of cups anywhere. They are also all the rage right now apparently. They make my smoothies travel friendly and there is something that I love about drinking through straws. I know that sounds strange but straws are awesome. And if your smoothie is super-thick it makes it so much easier to get down. It also helps me control the urge to chug my smoothie because it is so delicious!
This is probably the easiest smoothie recipe ever. I find that so many smoothie recipes feel the need to be super fancy for the internet. As I stated earlier I am lazy in the morning. I do not have time for a complicated smoothie recipe. I just want it to fill me up, taste delicious and make me feel like I am starting my day off healthy. This does just that and tastes exactly like a Booster Juice Funky Monkey. It also keeps me full for about three to four hours. I could start my day off with this smoothie every day and be the happiest monkey ever!

ReplyDeleteSo good. I had to use what I had so I used chocolate milk but I only added 3/4c and vanilla Greek yogurt. I added 3 tbsp of quick oats and 1-3 TBSP of Planters crunchy peanut butter. So good. Will be my go to in the mornings from now on. Thanks for the base recipe :)
